Well, I’ve been really quiet on the site this year but I thought I’d do a year in review anyway because it hasn’t been a quiet year in real life! It seems a bit of a roller coaster ride of good things and drama but all in all, it was a calmer year than recently previous years.
Earlier this weekend, I posted on Facebook that I was closing the shop here at Archaic Arcane. I guess I worded it poorly and some people thought that I meant that Archaic Arcane was going away altogether. Let me clarify. This is not the case!
SHOP.archaicarcane.com is going away as of December 31, 2018. Only the online shop.
That’s all. I’m still servicing machines. I’m still teaching classes. I’m still making videos. I’m still posting up here on the site as time permits.
All of the patterns that I had in the shop are still available at Craftsy. Yup. Not even a week after I posted this, Craftsy punted about 90% of its designers off its site – me included. As of now, I’m taking a step back to evaluate how I want to continue to make patterns and possibly parts and classes available. It may mean a resurrection of the shop after all. In the meantime, if you need anything from me, go ahead and hit that “Contact” link in the upper right corner and we can talk about what you need.
I made this decision for a few reasons: Continue reading Announcement – Online shop closure – maybe?
Where have I been?
Some months ago, in order to feed my budding interest in spinning, I joined the local Weavers Guild. Since then, I’ve accidentally become more and more involved with the guild.
How does one become accidentally involved? In stages. 😉
It started out with me doing some tune-ups on the guild’s wheels. Tune-ups that are still ongoing with some of the consumables being replaced. While I’ve been doing these tune-ups, the questions naturally come about – why are you using this instead of that? What about when this happens, etc.
Then it moved on to the talk of me teaching a class. Continue reading Spin me round faster – announcements about site and classes
When I started posting about sewing machines, the intention was to cover what I was doing along with some of the maintenance we should all be doing and some of the basic repairs that nearly everyone could do.
Eventually, I started to get requests for certain posts and videos which is extremely flattering. It told me that people were enjoying – and learning from – what I was doing. Some of the requests have been excellent suggestions and often form the basis of the posts you’ve seen on this site. Continue reading Scope and Archaic Arcane
I just realized it’s been nearly 6 months since I updated the blog.
I apologize for that everyone! It’s been a really up and down several months. I thought I’d update you on some of the larger points. Continue reading Sand slipping through my hands – A 5 month update
Last week, support for the operating system on the computer that brings you ArchaicArcane.com was discontinued. This is not unlike when Microsoft said no more XP.
What this means for AA is that I need to do some behind the curtain maintenance before I can do the on-stage updates. I’m working on many things at once and you’ll start to see some posts hopefully this month.
The server and a quilt I was working on last month were the top priorities keeping me away from the site. Now though, I have lots to say, I just need to take care of the server first so you can read about it when I tell it! 🙂 Continue reading A little wizardry – overdue maintenance on Archaic Arcane
It’s OK, read to the end. 🙂
I apologize for the huge absence. I’m still working on posts slowly but I thought I’d update the blog on why I’ve been away. (I have been posting a little on the facebook page if you’re a FB’er.)
I won’t be sad to see 2014 go. It started out great. A great trip to Willam’s Lake to teach. Certification as a Brother technician for Sparrow Studioz.
The summer though….
The summer in particular was beyond “character building” for both Ryan and I. Continue reading Message to myself
Today, while perusing the site stats, I noticed that we’re suddenly getting a ton of hits from Facebook, Twitter and other sharing places.
A great big “Welcome!” to our new readers!! This is so exciting! I’m a closet introvert, but I just love that what I’m talking about is important to you, and I look forward to your comments and our discussions!

Update 06-30-2016: The latest batch of Singer Lube I received from the supplier is no longer suitable for use in Singer motors. As such, I’m recommending the use of Petroleum jelly.
Over the last few months, I’ve been hearing that Singer Lube / Lubricant / Motor Lube (S2129) is getting really hard to find, especially here in Canada. This has been my experience as a consumer as well. Walmart used to carry it, but no longer. I believe that it may have been at Fabricland at one point. Also, no longer. With the loss of the Singer store in Edmonton, there were no longer any options I was aware of in my area. Continue reading Greased Lightning – Singer motor lube in Canada
I thought it was a little quiet around here, and in all honesty, I’ve not really had a lot of comments in the past, so I thought it might be normal.
Turns out one of the many many many recent updates to one of the WordPress plugins I use here broke the comments feature, and the software couldn’t be bothered to tell me!
“This piece of the blog is generating copious errors, I thought you’d like to know” would have been enough. 😉
A big thanks to leighway from the QB for letting me know that there was an issue that made me decide to investigate.
The problem that occurred would have looked like this:
- You click in the “Leave a Reply” box, and proceed to type up your message.
- When you’re finished, you click “Post Comment”, then the dreaded “ERROR” appears. Something about not providing the right captcha code. And of course, your comment goes into neverland. How rude!
- But wait, what code?
And therein lies the problem. There was no captcha code for you to enter! I’ve made a change to the software to get around it for now. The captcha won’t appear still, but it won’t check for it either.
Comments of course will have to be moderated as a result, but I filter nothing other than porn and spammers.
I will update this post if I find a proper fix, or I find out that captcha or WP have fixed the issue. I suspect captcha, so I will report the issue this week.
In the meantime, chat amongst yourselves. 🙂 And please accept my apologies. I wasn’t being rude on purpose!
