Step Away from the Glue Gun and no one has to get hurt…..tales of our renovations

Originally Published 2009.

Today marks my first day of freedom from my contract, and the first day of a medium sized reno to the house. The plan?

Finish painting – only the Master bed and bathroom and main bathroom are currently finished.
Finish Flooring – Maple hardwood installed last Dec, but we still have the front entrance, the kitchen and the bathroom to do.
Tile the backsplash  in the kitchen
Tile the kitchen counters
Paint the cupboards – some people should have to take a taste test before they’re allowed to paint a house!!

This is what we come from:

The first hurdle (of this round):

The tiles on the walls of the kitchen.

Most of the tiles literally fell off the walls.  I could pull them off with my hands, and they’d come off in chunks of 3, 4, 5, 6.

Then I reached the final 5, near the left side of the sink, around the corner of the window.

Hot Glue.  Some idiot had hot glued these last 5 tiles (in the middle of the wall, I might add) onto the wall.

Reasons why I believe that all persons who enter a Home Depot or other renovation store should have to take an IQ test:

#29 – Hot glue guns have no place in a kitchen renovation.

So here we are about 2 weeks later:

We had a little help from one of the kitties:

The flooring isn’t finished, because we’re undecided on what we want to do with it.

The kitchen is finished (with the exception of flooring) and the paint is finished.

For some reason, all of the walls turned out looking purple in the images (on my monitor).  I assure you, they’re not.

We chose from the “Soft and Elegant” collection from CIL.
The colors used were: Obelisk and Buffy.  Both are muted browns.
The whites are exactly that.  Un-tinted White base.

Appliances are new-ish, we’ve been obtaining them since we moved in
Couches are a present to myself last Christmas.

    1. Thank you!! The house has changed somewhat since then – we grew into it! I hadn’t realized this would re-post when I made the edits but at least it sees the light of day. When I posted it the first time, the blog was very new, I was mostly talking to myself at that point. 🙂
